World's Fittest Weekender

The most athletic men and women on the planet head into to the Austrian mountains each May to compete in a festival of multi-eventing. The annual Hypomeeting combines glorious scenery, perfect weather, beer tents and local fans who genuinely care about this niche two-day event.

Jess Ennis-Hill won the heptathlon here ahead of her London 2012 gold, and used it to launch a comeback prior to her world title last year. This year though, she has had to pull out due to injury, with her place in Rio 2016 already secure.

The stage is clear then, for her new challengers, who seem stronger than ever, with Canada’s new world indoor champ Brianne Theisen-Eaton, 27, reaching her peak.

Watch out too for Britain’s rising stars Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Morgan Lake, who both need to achieve the qualifying standard for Rio 2016.

With the finest athletes descending on a verdurous border town of 11,000, you are one cheap flight away from joining them meeting-goetzis.at
