Head stall

Let’s get this straight from the outset – this skill is completely useless; if you try to do it in a game, a centre-back will kick you in the nuts. If you one day sign for Barcelona and they unveil you in front of the main stand, though, then you can bust it out on the podium. So learn it now – you never know when this stuff will come in handy.

First thing’s first, you need to find the perfect spot on your forehead where the ball will balance. This is slightly below your hairline, and will vary from person to person, so take a few minutes placing the ball on your forehead (by hand) and look for the spot where it rests most naturally.

This bit is important. Make sure your weight is over your toes, your knees are slightly bent and – once the ball is positioned – your arms are away from your body to help you balance. It’s also vital that you resist temptation to stiffen your neck – keep your neck nice and relaxed, and you’ll be able to make small subtle movements required to keep the ball balanced.

The idea really is to get the ball in that spot, then use small bodily movements to keep it in that place. If your neck’s tensed, then it won’t serve as a cradle and you’ll spend all day just sprinting round the garden trying to keep the ball in place.

As you improve, you can begin to get it into position by doing some head ups. Once the ball runs out of power, get it into place and begin the skill. Stick at it and eventually you’ll be able to go direct from kick ups to killing it dead on your forehead.

Best get outside and practise.
