Harry Kane: "I think England can win it"

We caught up with England’s new golden boy Harry Kane, to talk about his rise to the top of the Premier League and Euro 2016. Here’s a sneak preview of the interview and photoshoot. Find the full version in June’s Forever Sports magazine

At the age of 22, and with a Premier League Golden Boot among his prized possessions, Kane is set to lead the line for England this summer, but did he believe that was anything but a dream only 18 months earlier?

“I didn’t think I’d be a no-brainer but it was something I wanted. I knew if I was working hard enough in training [at club level], I could give the players a run for their money and try to break into the team. I knew if I got into the Spurs team, I’d get a chance for England.”

Heading into his first major international tournament, Kane is fully aware of the pain English fans have endured across the last decade, something he has suffered himself as a supporter.

“I remember watching the 2002 World Cup in school and going in early to watch it. We had a lot of great players then playing good football and the country was excited.

“I cried when we went out to Brazil. I was a passionate fan. Whenever we lost, whether it was a penalty shootout [2004 and 2006] or in normal play [2002]… I was quite a sad kid.”

And does the man himself believe that England can put past failures behind them and lift the Henri Delaunay trophy in Paris on 10 July?

“I think we can win it. You have to have that mindset, but there are a lot of good teams in the tournament, so we know we’re going to have to put in a lot of good performances, like the Germany one.”
