Going for goldenberries

No, Beckham doesn’t have a new nickname – it’s a superfood, stoopid

Goldenberries are the greatest thing to come out of Peru since Nolberto Solano’s free kicks (oh, and Paddington Bear). The nutrient-dense South American superfood is big on antioxidants and has a tangy flavour, which makes it a great alternative to sweet sugary things. But don’t just take our word for it; nutritionist Meghan Telpner, founder of the Academy of Culinary Nutrition, loves a goldenberry, too.

They’ve got the lot

“Goldenberries are an excellent source of bioflavonoids, a class of phytonutrients that help support your immune system and have anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties,” says Telpner. “They’re rich in pectin, a source of soluble fibre that helps support the health of the cells lining the digestion tract.

“Goldenberries contain 16 per cent protein, as well as vitamin A, vitamin C and the energy-boosting B vitamin family.”

Bang for your buck

“Many of us with busy lives are looking to eat efficiently. Since goldenberries are so rich in nutrition, they give a good bang for our buck.”

Versatile fruit

“Goldenberries can be used as a topping for cereals, salads, yoghurt and granola. They’re amazing in smoothies, chia porridges and baked goodies. Since they have a tart flavour, they can be used to replace other tangy dried fruits like cranberries, too.”
