AJ Cann: What's in your fridge?

Jacksonville Jaguar's left guard AJ Cann lets us into his fridge to show us what it takes to power a formidable 6ft 3in, 22-stone NFL superstar.

Breakfast

I have some eggs and turkey sausages, they’re a healthier meat for me. I eat that every morning before I work out. I love cooking breakfast food. On a day when I don’t have to work out and can just get up and eat something, I’d go for some pancakes too.

Lunch I eat out a lot but I try to go to healthier places, especially during lunch. There’s a place near me called Firehouse that does good subs and I always get a ‘steamer sub’. It has roast beef, tomatoes, lettuce and some Italian dressing.

Peanut Butter & Jelly

I’m not much of a cook but I’ve usually got some peanut butter and jelly to make a sandwich for a snack. And I’ve got fruit to snack on too – bananas and apples are my favourite fruits. I have oranges every now and again.

Southern Cuisine

I’m from South Carolina and I grew up on sweet peas, corn, cabbage and collard greens. I like those kind of vegetables rather than, say, broccoli. Being a southern boy, when I go back home for the weekend my grandmother cooks the best food.

There’s nothing like a good soul food dish. I’d kill for some macaroni and cheese, it’s my favourite dish. I don’t eat it very often though, it’s more of a treat. During off-season I get to go home a lot and during those weekends there’s that Sunday when you can cheat a bit.

Grandma's Macaroni

I’m supposed to make some macaroni with my grandmother, so she can teach me how to make her special recipe. So once I learn it I’ll know the secret. I don’t know if I’ll tell anyone though!

Protein & Carbs

My favourite carbs are brown rice and quinoa. I don’t eat quinoa that often but when we do have it I seem to eat a lot of it. For protein, just a good old-fashioned steak.

On match day my body won’t let me eat as much as I normally do because of nerves. I feel like nerves will always be there in some way, it’s normal for an athlete. Then as soon as you step on the field of play they go away.

AJ Cann Fridge (Jenny Quiggen)

We have a team nutritionist, Mindy Black, who tells us what to eat and answers any questions we have about nutrition. We have weight loss programmes, weight gain programmes and even ones just to maintain weight. My weight is pretty consistent so I’m just maintaining it at the moment.

I’m a picky eater so I have to try a lot of different things that I might not otherwise eat, because they’re good for me. But if Mindy says it’s good for me, I have to give it a try. I’ve tried broccoli a few times and it hasn’t grown on me yet, but maybe it will in future.

Smoothie Operator

At the training facility we have a smoothie station with smoothie machines to make drinks. We make a list of what we want to drink after practice and my blend is peanut butter, banana and chocolate.

Make It Snappy

I mostly drink water and Gatorade. I drink them so much that I tried to have a soda one day and I couldn’t even drink it, I just wasn’t used to the taste any more. I like the fruit punch and fierce grape flavours of Gatorade and we also drink their protein shakes at the training facility after a workout.

Sounds Fishy

I’ve never been a huge fan of fish but since being in the NFL I’ve eaten it a lot. It’s always on the menu at the training ground.

Got Company?

If I had guests to cook for I’d try to do something with chicken and rice. Maybe a salad or veg on the side. As much as I don’t like it, I’d probably cook broccoli – it looks good for decoration.
