How to spend 16 days in Rio

As if Rio de Janeiro needed an excuse to make a fuss, the Olympics is in town. Go to the beach, do keep-ups, drink Caipirinhas and party like you can nowhere else on the planet. If you’re nervous about Zika, freeze your sperm beforehand like Greg Rutherford.

Start at Parque Lage and walk with wild monkeys up the one-hour forest path to Christ the Redeemer. Spend the day playing football and drinking cheap local lager on the connecting beaches of Copacabana (mad) and Ipanema (nice). If you want to see the other side of the city you can take a favela tour. In the evening, get the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain for some stunning sunset views.

This is not a city where you need to plan your night in advance. Crowds gather and stuff happens. Bars don’t get busy until 10pm and if you go downtown find Rio Scenarium, a late bar that’s all kinds of mad. Craft beer is booming in Brazil so try Botto Bar and learn to Samba at the Carioca de Gema.

Your definitive guide to Rio de Janeiro

Rio’s not short of churrascarias (all-you-can-eat barbecue restaurants) and one of the best is Churrascaria Palace. If you want to try some moqueca (delicious fish soup), head to Nomangue. After all that meat and fish, you’ll still have room for some Brazilian chocolate truffles, so check out Brigadeiros do Tuiter.

Romário scored 55 goals for Brazil and is now a Rio de Janeiro senator // Rio’s iconic statue Christ the Redeemer is hit by lightning up to four times a year // A world record 173,850 people watched Brazil lose the 1950 World Cup to Uruguay at the Maracanã // Some 3.5 million saw Rod Stewart perform on Copacabana beach at NYE in 1994, and again in 2011.

“Here the morning is born like everywhere in the world, but a feeling vibrates, that things loved each other during the night”

Carlos Drummond de Andrade (Brazilian poet)
