How to spend 48 hours in Bordeaux

This is not the real world. Most of the city is a world heritage site, so you can’t move far without crashing into a 15th-century palace or ancient monastery. It’s a feast for the eyes, and thirsty work, so relax in one of the many squares and treat yourself to a cool pression for €1 or a bottle of the local red for €8.

The open-air Marché des Capucins is not the most attractive, but it is the best place to people watch. The 18th-century palace Place de la Bourse possibly is the most attractive. Climb the stunning 114m Saint-Michel Bell Tower for €5 and if you want an adventure, hit Project Darwin, an old warehouse across the river.

L’Apollo has live music and a bit more of an edge than most of the city. If you want to sit in a limestone cavern and try red wine, go to Verre o vin. There are a dozen or so English-style pubs with names like HMS Victory, but the best for beer is the Frog & Rosbif, which feels more German. Maybe we’re not so different.

Sit in a beautiful old church house and enjoy the fine food at Le Petit Maison de Pierre. Embrace the chaos of French bistro Café Populaire, the kind of place where everything is so French that everyone sings about it at the end of the night. If you want to pretend you’re in someone else’s kitchen, go to La Tupina.
