Save your summer

Missed out on Glasto again? Here are five festivals you can still get tickets for.

The Great Escape

(18-20 May) Brighton, UK

During the noughties, the Great Escape developed a reputation as the best UK festival to see new bands. Since then, it’s grown to international fame, pulling in acts from all over the world to the South coast. Nowadays, there are fewer bands and more solo artists, but there’s still a heavy emphasis on great live music.

Worldwide Festival

(3-9 July) Sète, France

If you want 100% vibes, and a Mediterranean beach holiday with the best possible soundtrack, then check out Gilles Peterson’s annual jam just outside Montpellier in Southern France. As well as the festival area, there are street parties and live music at venues in town, and a big stage on the beach where locals mingle with festival tourists. This year’s line-up includes Sampha and The Cinematic Orchestra.

Green Man

(17-20 Aug) Brecon Beacons, UK

While the entire country wakes up early on a Sunday to squabble for Glasto tickets, Green Man has sneakily become one of the UK’s finest festivals. In terms of line-up, it generally avoids the big Radio One-friendly acts, and opts for headliners like Future Islands, PJ Harvey, Michael Kiwanuka and Kate Tempest.

(30 Aug-3 Sept) Pula, Croatia

Held at an abandoned fort on Croatia’s Adriatic coast, the key to Dimensions is pacing yourself. Arrive on the Wednesday for the opening concert in the town’s amphitheatre, headlined this year by Grace Jones. Get some rest, get up early for a swim, then acclimatise for the best weekend of house and techno in the world.

(7-10 Sept) Lulworth, Dorset

Bestival gets a bit of a hard time, because it seems like it always rains, and the fact that it’s a giant fancy-dress party sometimes feels a bit like forced fun. But ignore the haters, because Bestival is a fun-filled weekend with a killer lineup – The XX, Rag’n’Bone Man, Little Dragon, Dizzee, Jamie T, DJ Shadow and Kurupt FM, plus a shedload of reggae, funk and dance. Also, the decision to relocate from the usual Isle of Wight venue means you can get drunk on the coach on the way down and not worry about feeling seasick.
