The world's fittest places to work

Working nine to five, what a way to make a living. Barely getting by, it’s all taking and no giving. They just use your mind, and they never give you credit: it’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it. Dolly had a point around the 9-5. For a nation of office-based worker drones, keeping fit can be tough. Here are seven places of work where fitness is king.

Technogym gym ()

The region of Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy is home to fitness equipment specialists Technogym, and their ultimate utopian workplace. 1,000 workers have free rein over a two-storey gym, running track and basketball courts as well as free tai chi, spinning classes, an army of personal trainers and a delicious all-you-can-eat €1 lunch. Exercise is logged, and the most active employees receive gifts.

Australia’s leading health insurance company went all out when it attempted to build Melbourne’s healthiest workplace two years ago. Curved staircases and ramps are designed to improve their employees’ fitness, and they have multi-purpose exercise courts and ping-pong tables. The edible garden promotes healthy eating.

SAS Institute

This North Carolina-based tech company has consistently made the list of best places to work in the world. Employees enjoy a state-of-the-art fitness centre, personal training, fields for football, softball and Frisbee – and trails for jogging and biking. You are encouraged to use these facilities around the clock, and can receive gifts and adventure trips for participating.

Google offices ()

The internet giant is famed for having outrageous perks for its many employees, such as the giant slide. At Global HQ in California, they’ve also got seven fitness centres with personal trainers, all the gym equipment you’ll ever need, climbing walls, volleyball courts, swimming pools and 11 gourmet health food cafeterias. All for free. There are high-tech Google offices in London, Manchester and Dublin, too.

Johnson & Johnson

UK winners of a 2015 Vitality competition to find the healthiest large company to work for, Johnson & Johnson’s Maidenhead HQ has all the kit for their employees to stay fit, with on-site fitness centres, ergonomic workstations and places where workers can measure and monitor their health status.

At their Oregon HQ, workout time is allotted during office hours. Choose from basketball, racquetball, squash, and tennis; swim in the Olympic-sized pool, take on the 34ft climbing wall; play in the beach volleyball arena; run the forested outdoor running track (made from old sneakers); or get on the TdF simulator.
