TETE DE CHIEN, MONACO

August

Sometimes you just want to escape it all, so you can’t blame this lad for taking to the tightrope 500m above the Monaco seafront. Doing it barefoot and topless seems excessive, but whatever works.

MOBILE, ALABAMA

October

Across the USA Hillary Clinton got loads more votes than Trump but he killed it in states like Alabama, where he won by 28 percentage points. Here’s why.

RIO, BRAZIL

August

It was expected to be the biggest shambles going but the Rio 2016 Olympics delivered epic stories galore. Like Pusarla Sindhu here, who become the first Indian to make an Olympic badminton final and, at 21, the youngest Indian to win a medal in an individual event.

HEILONGJIAN PROVINCE, CHINA

February

For some reason this became a thing in 2016. Take some boiling water, spray it in freezing temperatures and watch it freeze. This man took advantage of the unexpectedly cold February in China to do just that while wearing budgie smugglers.

HUNAN PROVINCE, CHINA

January

Workers install the first of 99 glass panels in the world’s longest (430m) and highest (300m) glass-bottomed bridge in Zhangjiajie’s ‘Avatar mountains’. It opened for business in August, then shut again 13 days later due to ‘overwhelming demand’.

NEVADA, USA

November

Cowboy hat, loyal dog, perfect silhouette. It’s fair to say that when the brightest moon in almost 70 years lit up the Earth’s night sky in mid November, this guy did it better than you. Than all of us.

RIO, BRAZIL

July

Amid the horrible abuse stories enveloping the world of sport right now, Larrissa Miller tells a positive story. As an ambassador for Bravehearts – an Australian organisation focusing on child sexual assault – Miller has helped to raise awareness of the issue by talking about the abuse she suffered as a child. This year, she smashed expectations to become Australia’s sole gymnast to go to Rio, where she just missed out on the final of the individual event.

LOFTUS ROAD, LONDON

April

You don’t have to be rich / To be my girl,
You don’t have to be cool / To rule my world,
Ain’t no particular sign I’m more compatible with,
I just want your extra time and your… Kiss

WHITE HART LANE, LONDON

February

Oh, Crystal Palace. Remember when life was this good? Free-flowing football; big papa Pards in the pub; Yannick Bolasie taking selfies with the fans after beating Tottenham in the FA Cup fifth round. Palace went on to make the final, where they lost to Man United. Then Bolasie left. And Palace never won another game.
