How to fix indigestion

Indigestion can be a real pain... literally. Here's how to cure it

1 // What does it feel like?

A sharp pain or a burning sensation. This is commonly known as heartburn. Symptoms, which appear after eating or drinking, also include feeling bloated, nausea, belching and bringing up fluid or food into the gullet (acid reflux).

2 // Who gets it?

Indigestion is a common problem and can affect anyone. Most of the cases are mild and can be treated easily.

3 // Why does it happen?

Acid in the stomach breaks down the lining, leading to irritation and inflammation. This can be painful and very uncomfortable.

Indigestion is usually related to eating but may also be due to smoking, alcohol or stress.

4 // What’s the cure?

There are a few off-the-shelf remedies, but the most well-known relief is Gaviscon, which comes in liquid or tablet form. It lasts twice as long as antacids and the handy pack of Double Action liquid sachets are ideal for when you’re on the go (£4.99 for 12 from Superdrug). Most people are able to prevent indigestion quite simply by changing their diet and lifestyle. For example: don’t eat a Big Mac at half time...
