Powder Power

Our man Paul Frost tests hair powders for hair that needs a bit of oomph...

Men don’t have to worry about too many things when it comes to hair, but fine or thinning hair is one of them. With hairstyles focused on strong quiffs and a natural, textured look, what’s needed is a product to give structure while avoiding that crunchy, gelled look. Enter powders.

Master Barber Stell at the Aveda Institute says, “hair powders work by giving structure to the root of the hair. Separate the hair when dry and carefully sprinkle the powder on the roots, then you can style however you want.” We tried a few out, but which do we rate?

Fudge Urban Powder Styler

How much? £6.99

This was the first powder hair product I came across, and it was a revelation as it gave my fine hair a much-needed boost. Like all powders, less is more on the roots, but this is easy to use, plus I love the package design.

American Crew Boost Powder

How much? £14.50

All good things come in small packaging. I like how compact this is, and the spout on the edge helps to ensure you don’t overuse the product. It is a great holiday carry-on, and works really well in hotter climes.

Aveda Shampure

How much? £22

This is a dry shampoo unlike others. Gently squeeze the bottle and this non-aerosol powder will puff out in a fresh-smelling mist. Perfect for soaking up excess oil in the hair, or simply to add volume up top.
