Five top tips for winter cycling

Don’t give up cycling just because it’s cold again. Here are five winter tips...

Stay warm

As temperatures drop and the chances of rain rise, try to keep your core warm and dry. A good base layer will help keep the chill out and let sweat evaporate, and will fit easily under a gilet or rain jacket.

Good gloves

You need your hands to be warm enough to pull your brakes and change gear. We’ve yet to find decent handlebar muffs (though we quite like, so until then upgrade your gloves to something windproof and ideally waterproof

Dry feet

It’s all about being warm and dry again, and this time it’s the other extremities: your feet. A pair of neoprene over shoes look stoopid but you won’t care as your feet will be snug, rather than soaked and numb.

No punctures

Nothing, nothing is worse than being cold and wet and getting a flat miles from home. So remove this possibility with solid tyres. Tannus make a range of choices to suit most bikes. They may be a fraction slower but who cares when you have peace of mind.

Be seen

A good light is obviously essential. But the Blaze goes further. As well a 300 lumen light it projects a laser image of a bike onto the road ahead. Has the ability to make other road users, even cabbies, feel warmly towards you.
