Stand out by livening up your formal wear

You’ve got a posh event to attend, and want to look smart while standing out from the crowd. Go overboard and you’ll look a fool, but get it spot on and you’ll look like the man. Sotos Georgalli, creative director at Moss Bros, has some tips on picking alternative formal wear.

Give tweed a chance
By braving something different, like neutral tweed, you can bring several other elements into the outfit, maintain the smartness and add an extra bit of style. It also allows the wearer to introduce elements such as bold pocket squares or a pair of suede boots – those will stand out.

Check yourself
A subtle check pattern can bring any look to life, and work as a great guideline for what other colours to wear. A more textured material enhances the overall appearance and adds value. If you’re feeling brave, go for Prince of Wales check.

Velvet isn’t underground
Velvet is set to be one of 2016’s biggest menswear trends, as men become more daring. Get involved.

Absolute belter
Accessorise. Little flashes, such as statement cufflinks, can add something a little bit extra – and let’s not forget the all-important belt. Make sure your belt and shoes match to ensure the finished look is not only stylish, but also considered.

Like a glove
Lastly, and most importantly, make sure you get your suit fitted – this will make sure your formalwear is up to scratch, even when it’s not traditionally formal.
